We have all heard the reports of how microbeads are bad for the environment. The Canadian government recently added microbeads to their list of toxic substances under the Environmental Protection Act. Many brands were already pulling microbeads from products or plan to over the next few years as they reformulate their products and bring out new ones but why wait when there are great microbead-free products available already? That way we are not adding to the 500,000 pieces of plastic particles per square kilometre already in the Great Lakes with tiny beads that are impossible to clean up.
I need an exfoliant, especially in summer when I am showing more skin and my pores get clogged up from sunscreen and sweat. So going scrub free isn’t an option for me. I recently tried BVspa by Bon Vital’s Lavender and Rosemary Sugar Scrub which is available at Shoppers Drug Mart (so you can earn Optimum points and help the environment with your choice of scrub).
BVSpa products are designed to give you a high end spa quality product for an affordable price. At $12 for microbead free, plus no sulfates, parabens or phthalates, and promising exfoliation and moisturizing properties, these”Wellness for your Skin” products set the bar high for themselves.
While it is harder to use sugar scrubs in the shower compared to a microbead exfoliant as they melt, it is not that hard to step out of the stream of the water or a dry scrub followed by a rinse does an amazing job at exfoliating dry skin. The BVspa Sugar Scrub was plenty of exfoliation for me with a thick paste of natural sugar crystals with safflower seed oil and Jojoba oil for moisturization. Plus lavender before bed is always soothing.
If you need more exfoliation, you can always opt for their Salt Scrub which can remove more calloused or dry skin. It contains Olive Oil and Jojoba Oil to moisturize but they also have body butters and lotion to amp up the moisture after exfoliation.
The formula of the Lavender & Rosemary BVspa Sugar Scrub is full of sugar crystals so a little goes a long way. While it does melt in the shower, it is not instant but no pesky beads left on the skin either. The sugar is fairly rough but doesn’t scratch the skin and the shea butter and natural oils mixed in with the lavender and rosemary is soothing and moisturizing at the same time. It was gentle enough that I could use it even on my chest but works well enough to remove dry skin and that sweaty clogged pore feeling. I think I will pick up their Energizing Pink Grapefruit or Rejuvenating Pomegranate & Acai Berry next as lavender is not a morning scent for me – I need all the help waking up I can get lately!
Where to Buy BVSpa by Bon Vital Products
BVSpa sells four ranges of products in three scents in Canada. BVSpa Sugar Scrubs, Salt Scrubs, Body Lotion and Body Butters are available at Shoppers Drug Mart. They sell for $11.99 regular prices but you may get lucky and find them for less on sale. BVSpa products are still fairly new to Canada, Shoppers Drug Mart stores started stocking them in May. So if you have not noticed them, check again in the bath or skincare aisles.
