DAVIDsTEA Red Velvet Cake Tea Review

The last of the “sweetheart” part of the 10th anniversary collection is DAVIDsTEA Red Velvet Cake.  I did not pick up the tropical quad as I know I am not a huge fan of Copabanana or Buchu Superfruit and Rainbow Sherbet was fairly recent anyway.  Red Velvet Cake is another surprising addition to the throwbacks collection as it has actually been available online for a few months.

Chocolate and sprinkles?  Red Velvet Cake has everything you want in a dessert tea.  I was a little worried about the beetroot powder but the tea isn’t overly red so likely very small amounts.

Ingredients: Black tea, milk chocolate (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, milk, soy lecithin, salt, vanilla), white chocolate (sugar, palm kernel oil, whey, skim milk, mono and diglycerides, soy lecithin, vanilla), sprinkles (sugar, corn starch, vegetable oil, soy lecithin, dextrin, colour (red 40 lake, yellow 6 lake), confectioner’s glaze, natural and artificial flavour, carnauba wax), beetroot powder, natural and artificial flavouring.

Steeping Instructions for DAVIDsTEA Red Velvet Cake: 1-2 Perfect spoons per 16oz almost boiling 95℃/200℉ water.  Steep for 3-5 minutes.

Pricing: At $7.98 per 50g, this was the cheaper of the anniversary throwback teas.  Plus there was a code for 20% off anniversary teas.

DAVIDsTEA Red Velvet Cake Tea Review

Red Velvet Cake had been back for a while before the anniversary collection was released.  It is Chelle’s (Makeup Your Mind) favourite so I had mentioned to her months ago that it was back.  So was strange to see it be a featured throwback tea.  Like Apple Custard, I think I liked it more than I did when it originally released.

It has a cakey rich flavour but not too much red velvet taste.  My old notes on this one said I didn’t like the maple flavour.  I didn’t get any notes of maple this time around so maybe it has changed, or my tastebuds have.  I checked Steepster and many say maple from the original release too.  He really liked this tea as a latte and just thought it was a chocolate tea.  He hates actual red velvet cake so I should not have told him what it was as he suddenly changed his mind about liking it.  Oh well, more for me.

This is an infuser tea for me because it does leave that nasty film in my steeper.  I had to take it apart to clean it after making this just once.  Typical of chocolatey teas though.

DAVIDsTEA Red Velvet Cake Tea Latte

I really need a new milk frother.  Mine broke and my little handheld one from Kitchen Stuff Plus just isn’t the same.  So excuse my sad latte.

Milk really brings out the cakey flavours in DAVIDsTEA Red Velvet Cake tea.  Two perfect spoons is enough to get decent flavour when making a latte.  Use 10 oz almost boiling water for a 16oz mug and top with milk.
