I realize that lapsang souchong is not for everyone.  The smokey smell, the strong flavour, definitely an acquired taste.  But if you have ever wanted to try one, Wild Heather Tea Company’s Campfire Smores is a great starter.  With a sprinkling of cocoa nibs, chocolate chips and sugar the sweeter taste makes it the perfect beginner tea for a Lapsang.  Still very smoky (even more so than DAVIDsTEA Lapsang Souchong Star but less pine flavour) but the sweetness and chocolate make it more drinkable.

Wild Heather Tea Company Campfire Smores Ingredients & Steeping Instructions

Ingredients: Lapsang Souchong, cocoa nibs, chocolate chips and pearl sugar

Steeping Instructions: 1.5tsp per 8oz water, steep 3-5 minutes in boiling water.

I used a DAVIDsTEA Perfect Spoon for 12 oz boiling water and steeped for the full five minutes but I like the smoky flavour so wanted it all to come through.  The chocolate and sugar melted easily leaving a deep murky cuppa. At $10 for 50g it is fairly affordable.  You can grab a 20g bag to sample for $6 too.

As mentioned, the Lapsang Souchong in Wild Heather’s Campfire Smores tea is a bit less pine-y and more smoky than DAVIDsTEA Lapsang Souchong Star.  It seems to hold more smoke flavour when brewed but has a sweetness behind it that makes it more drinkable thanks to the chocolate and sugar.  It is a murky tea as the chocolate chips melt into the tea.

Definitely not something I would serve to a guest who is not a big tea drinker.   It is nice to see one from a smaller indie tea company too. So many stick to the basics.  I picked this up at Craftadian on the weekend and another woman smelling the teas at the same time wrinkled her nose at it.  While it was top of my list of the teas Wild Heather sells on Etsy, I was a little surprised that it made it to the show as likely not a best seller outside of the tea crowd.

Wild Heather Campfire Smores Tea - Latte with bag

Wild Heather Campfire Smores Tea - Latte

I will latte-fy anything with chocolate and Wild Heather Tea Company Campfire Smores is no exception.  The smokey flavour still comes out even with the added milk.  The milk does bring out more of the s’mores taste and less smoke though.  There is some sediment from this tea that settled quickly in the latte so it got smokier as I got to the bottom of my giant mug.

Excuse my sad looking latte, I still need to replace my milk frother and either the mason jar method sucks in general or the milk I bought doesn’t want to foam.  Recommendations for milk frothers?  I am thinking of going appliance based instead of handheld.
