By now, many of us have used the last of our White Chocolate Peppermint and Candy Cane Crush tea but want more.  Since most stores are long sold out of their Christmas teas, I attempted making my own.  Since I have a few bags of Teavana’s left (ok I have some Candy Cane Crush left too, but rationing), I went with black tea rather than rooibos but they are easily interchangeable.  The great thing about making your own blend of minty tea is you can make it as chocolatey, sweet or minty as you like.

I used 40g of “Afternoon Black” tea from a local tea shop with 10g of their “Pure Peppermint”.  Then added in a handful of white chocolate chips and crushed candy canes. Their peppermint is pretty strong so you may want to try a cup at a time until you get the perfect mix for you.

It cost less than $7 for all of the ingredients for this tea and with the weight of the chocolate chips, I have over 100g – much cheaper than either of the originals.  Plus I had some chocolate chips to munch on!   You can use any plain black tea.  I wouldn’t go the Earl Grey route but any basic breakfast tea would work.  If you can’t find peppermint, DavidsTea sells Peppermint Amour which would work great.  The chocolate chips are from the bulk section of my local grocery store but I am sure the bagged ones work just as well.

The great thing about making your own white chocolate peppermint tea is that you can make it as minty or sweet as you like.  Candy Cane Crush had lots of sugar and I personally found it a bit too sweet at times, so I made mine without and sweeten after as needed.  Since he is not the biggest mint fan, I made the bag up less minty and just add a teaspoon of the pure peppermint to mine too.

You do have to give it a good stir while steeping to help melt the chocolate chips and candy canes.  The black tea tends to settle with the chips and candy canes while the mint floats so stirring helps mix the flavours too.

The final tea looks a little like my morning cuppa of Irish Breakfast with milk – only no milk has been added, it is all chocolatey goodness.
