One of the things I love about the holiday season is all of the beauty sets that you can buy.  I remember as a teenager, buying a beauty gift set was see as a lazy gift.  Now it is all I want apart from a crazy amount of the DAVIDsTEA holiday stuff!  Makes it easier for people to shop for me too I guess.  Shoppers Drug Mart or some online shopping and they are done.

Ahead of the season, I tried out some of the newest Quo by Orly collections that are available at Shoppers Drug Mart.  Once I have my hands on them, they can’t stay unused for long.  The Quo by Orly Best of the Best Collection includes six mini bottles of nail polish for $20.  Perfect size and price for those work and other gift exchanges if you get paired with a beauty lover.  I will have a review and swatches of the set of 12 including in the Perfectly Painted bucket soon, so check back.

The Best of the Best set from Quo by Orly includes a very light pink, neon pink, bright pink, classic red, dark red and a slightly purple toned blue.  As someone who doesn’t wear a lot of bright red or pink, mini bottles are perfect for me as I would not use a regular bottle.  The glittering emery board shown is available separately for $3 if you want to add a little bling to your nail filing.

The brighter pinks are both fairly bright.  One has a more neon formula while the other is more crelly like in formula and a shade darker.  Seems a little strange to have such bright colours in a holiday collection but you can brighten up a mani with an accent nail.

The mini brush is a little hard to work with and can lead to more streaks.  While I would usually say go for thin coats for the best coverage, with these a thicker coat and more dry time helps reduce brush strokes and streaking.  A second coat while the nails are still wet lifts the polish and leaves bald spots, so be patient with them.

The blue polish has an almost jelly like formula with decent opacity.  I hate the word crelly… With two coats, nail line is visible in bright light but not as obvious in normal daylight unless looking for it.  The formula was fairly smooth but do allow for dry time between coats or it streaks.  The neon pink has a better formula as was smooth and even on both coats.

The lightest shade in the Best of the Best Collection unsurprisingly needed three coats compared to two shown for all others.  It was still fairly streaky and sheer on the second coat.  It has a slightly leather like semi-matte sheen to it.  So top coat is a must with this one.  The darker toned of the two bright pinks is more jelly in formula and could probably do with a third coat as there are some streaks visible in bright light. Again, this could probably be helped by thicker coats of polish.

The more classic holiday colours had better formulas than the others.  Both were more opaque and didn’t have as many streaking issues despite the tiny brush.  The red is more of a tomato red in shade which generally looks a bit better on my skintone but with a touch of orange.

For someone who loves pinks and reds, worth picking up.  I would have loved to see some of the metallics and darks that make me think fall/winter in a perfect Best of the Best holiday collection.  Once you get used to the formula and brushes, they are much easier to work with.

The Best of the Best Collection from Quo by Orly is available exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart for the holiday season.  Regular retail is $20 but they often have promotions on these gift sets and don’t forget to use your Optimum card!
