It has been ages since I have done galaxy nails but I was inspired while packing away my makeup and finding an unopened pack of sponges so decided that sparking galaxy nails were in order.
I love the look of galaxy nails and while not as time-consuming (or difficult) as other nail art, I find I don’t do them very often. I went with mostly holo or glitter polishes with some extra holo top coat and silver glitter for the stars for a super sparkling look. The photo doesn’t do the sparkle justice, but m camera was having a hard time focusing with multiple sparkles.
Sparkling Galaxy Nails – Supplies
- Zoya Storm (base)
- Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On
- Zoya Hazel
- Zoya Aurora
- Zoya Edyta
- Essence Let The Stars Rain Down On Me holo topcoat
- Essie LuxEffects Set in Stones
- Latex free makeup sponges
- CND Vinylux weekly top coat
Starting with a base of Zoya Storm, a beautiful black with scattered holo topped with a generous coat of top coat, I sponged on Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in White On to give the galaxy nails a base for colours. Over that, I sponged on Zoya Hazel (a light shimmery blue), Zoya Aurora (a beautiful bright purple with scattered holo) and then filled in darker areas with Zoya Edyta which is dark but has a slight green-gold tinge. Make sure to leave some of the white showing through the colours. The best way to do this is to rip the sponge rather than cutting it to get small jagged pieces.
Since the holo of the galaxy colours was barely noticeable, I added a single layer of Essence Let The Stars Rain Down on Me. Then using a sponge to control the glitter, sponged on Essie Lux Effects in Set in Stones for stars rather than painting them on in white as I usually do. In bright light, they shine like real stars and gives the overall look even more sparkle than the holo alone.
Top with a coat of CND Vinylux to seal it all and even out the glitter and you have sparkling galaxy nails!

Thank you! They are actually fairly easy to do compared to a lot of nail art, you can’t really go wrong because you can sponge on more dark. I don’t know why I don’t do them more often

Storm gets a lot of wear but if I had to pick a fave that is unique it would be Thea (a pixie dust) that is purple and glittery)

They are actually in really rough shape at the moment, I broke several with the renos/moving and my cuticles are suffering from painting and carrying boxes etc

Thankfully, these all dry fairly quickly when sponged on so don’t get muddy by mixing

It is hard to mess up. just dab the sponge on something before your nail so there isn’t too much polish on it (and rip, don’t cut the sponge into small pieces)
