It is not very often that I get the DAVIDsTEA tea of the month so early, but since I was buying some anyway, I had to get a small amount of Quince Charming to sample at home.  I am not the hugest fan of pear, so I wasn’t sure if I would like Quince Charming, but it is the tea of the month and my cat is named Quincy, so I had to try it right?

Someday my quince will come: Once upon a time, there was a bright, golden fruit. Not quite an apple, not quite a pear, but a different fruit altogether – with a divine, slightly floral aroma. The ancient Greeks used it in their wedding rituals. The Romans stewed it with honey. And it was even said to be Aphrodite’s favourite fruit. One day, we took this magic fruit and mixed it with apples, black tea and sweet blackberry leaves. Fruity, floral and rich, it was a match made in heaven. And they all lived happily ever after.

A mixture of Apple, black tea, sweet blackberry leaves, hibiscus, apple pomace (apple pomace, citric acid), quince, and natural quince flavouring, I expected Quince Charming to be more apple than the light pear taste you get from Quince.  Somehow, David’s Tea managed to get that pear taste and the light floral scent of a quince fruit into the cup.

The hibiscus gives it a slight pink colour, but none of the tartness you would usually find.  It does counteract the other sweeter flavours to make it sweet but not sickly sweet which I think it would border one without the blackberry and hibiscus.  There is also a slight licorice scent in the bag which does not come through in the actual tea.

DAVIDSTEA Quince Charming Steeping

There is a fair amount of fruit and tea in the mix and my small bag had a good mix.  Sometimes when you only get a small amount to sample, you don’t get the best mix due to settling in the large tubs.  The fruit softened quickly so regular steep times work.  This is good as I think if you steeped it too long, the hibiscus may take over the flavouring.
