Joy & Polish Co Spiced Plum & Goldschlacquer

Always looking out for local makers for beauty products, I noticed that the upcoming Craftadian show in Mississauga this weekend has a nail polish maker, Joy and Polish Co.  I can’t make it to the show this weekend, but tried out Stephanie’s personal fave polish, Goldschlacquer along with Spiced Plum and some of her new nail vinyls.

Like many indie polish makers, Stephanie got into making her own polishes about five years ago while doing her own nails and wanting that perfect colour and not finding it with the frankenpolishes she made mixing polishes in her stash.  All Joy and Polish Co polishes are personally hand-made in small batches by Stephanie to maintain quality.  They are also 5-free at only $10 for a decent sized bottle, no minis in her current collections!

Not sure what to buy, I asked Stephanie which was her favourite, and she chose Goldschlacquer which she loves everything about, from the cheeky name (because it is flakes of gold swirling around in a bottle of Goldschlager liqueur) to the way it looks over any colour, dark or light.  I am a flakie snob because I hate too much texture on my nails unless it is a sand/PixieDust and is meant to be textured but these flakes are so smooth on the nail even without top coat!

When asked about the inspiration for her polishes, Stephanie said

Metallics have been prominent since the “Fashion in the Age of Technology” theme at the Met Gala earlier this year, and this has carried over into nail polish as well. We have two metallic polishes in our newly released Fall/Winter 2016 Collection – When in Chrome, a reflective silver metallic; and Goldschlacquer, a clear base with gold flakes.  In addition to trends, I also look at Pantone’s colour forecasts for the upcoming seasons for inspiration.  Finally, I use my own interest and creativity to come up with ideas. One of the great things about having my own polish collection is being able to think, “gee, I’d really like a Grinch-y green jelly polish with red and gold glitter in it to wear during the holiday season”, and ultimately making it happen!

Joy and Polish is not just polish though, Stephanie also has sheets of vinyls – because who wants to wait for them to ship from other countries?  You can get mixed sheets for $4 each with different themes and while they are revamping their website, they should be up soon!  Plus mani bombs priced at 5 for $10 and cuticle oils for just $5.
